Become a Foster Parent

The Fostering Process

  • 1. Initial enquiry (24 hours): Contact a fostering agency to express your interest. They will respond within 24 hours.
  • 2. Initial visits (48 hours): A social worker will arrange a home visit within 48 hours, either in-person or virtually.
  • 3. DBS check (8 weeks): A background check for everyone in the household over 18 will be conducted.
  • 4. Medical assessment (1-6 months): A health check ensures foster carers are physically and mentally well.
  • 5. Assessment (3-6 months): Social workers conduct 8-10 visits to assess your home and suitability.
  • 6. Skills to Foster training (3 days): Attend required training during the assessment.
  • 7. Checks and references (3-6 months): Complete forms providing references to support your application.
  • 8. Fostering panel (1 day): A panel makes the final decision about your readiness to foster. This process ensures potential foster carers are thoroughly prepared and supported.
